Why Compost?

Food waste accounts for 30% of the household trash going into landfills and incinerators, where it has no chance to help build soil and do anything positive for the environment.

We want to encourage backyard composting so  everyone can enjoy the benefits of high-quality soil, growing healthy plants, reducing the need for toxic pesticides, improving water quality, and protecting the environment.

Why Use a Rain Barrel?

City of Troy

Rain barrels capture water that hasn't soaked into the ground after storms. If this water soaks into the ground and is not collected, the run-off can transport many poisons to our local rivers and streams. By using rainwater for watering lawns, gardens, plants, and more, you save water. Rainwater is much better than tap water for plants and the soil, since it can reduce or eliminate the need for pesticides or chemicals.
